Term Definition
XMLShort for Extensible Markup Language, a specification developed by the W3C, to share and describe data and its structure.  XML is a pared-down version of SGML, a robust protocol to encapsulate data via the HTTP protocol.  XML allows designers to create their own open, customized tags - enabling the definition, transmission, validation, and interpretation of data between applications and between organizations.
